Review of Old Leghumper Robust Porter from Thirsty Dog

Old Leghumber Robust Porter

Old Leghumber Robust Porter

I must admit, I bought a six pack of this beer because I loved the name.  This beer is from Thirsty Dog Brewing Company based in Akron Ohio.  The name of the beer is Old Leghumper and the label, if you can’t make it out, has a black dog with three sets of beautiful legs.  The tag line under the image is “So many legs… So little time!”  I love it.  This beer won a gold medal in 2002 at the World Beer Cup and a Bronze medal in 2000.

The beer pours a very dark brown but didn’t have much of a head.  It was less than a finger in height.  The head that was there was a creamy white color.

It has a very strong and pleasant aroma.  There is a strong smell of roasted malts as well as coffee and some chocolate.   It smells sweet and builds a certain amount of excitement for what is to come.

At first sip, the flavors I am getting the most are coffee, roasted malts and some chocolate.  It has a nice mouthfeel, maybe a little thin in the finish.  That thin finish is a little disappointing but the flavor and aroma make up for it.

It is an easy drinking beer and one that I would buy more of.  I wish they sold air fresheners that captured the aroma of this beer because I would certainly buy one or twelve.
